Official: Russia may reach carbon neutrality before 2060

GLASGOW, Nov 3 (PRIME) -- Russia could reach carbon neutrality before 2060 under favorable circumstances, Ruslan Edelgeriyev, special presidential representative for climate issues, told PRIME on Wednesday.

“The obligation to reach carbon neutrality until 2060 is an obligation that Russia undertook regardless of the circumstances,” he said.

“If we see that the restrictive measures and sanctions will be lifted for climate projects, if there are unified carbon markets, if results of climate projects are acknowledged, if there are no double standards, Russia will be capable of reaching carbon neutrality earlier if circumstances are favorable.”

He brought up the Nord Stream 2 project as an example, saying that the natural gas pumped through the pipeline is cleaner than the gas transited through Ukraine, but Europe wants to increase delivery through the old pipeline without mentioning any leaks.

“These are the double standards,” he said.
